Here are my notes from the presentation... S → Set the tone Set the tone by having trusting relationships. Be consistent in rules, routines, rewards, and consequences. Communicate these to students and parents. L → Let learning lead Start with the verbs in your standards, then create learning targets. Choose the tool based on the targets, making sure it’s the right time for the tool. Balance the time students are consumers of content and the time students are creators. A → Avoid the chaos Ensure the layout of your learning space is safe and conducive to having students devices handy. Use proximity to keep students on task. Set a timer so students can pace themselves. Make sure students pay attention to directions by putting computers into “courtesy mode” (closing or angling a computer screen or flipping over a tablet). Address misuse every time, otherwise it will become a bigger problem: “What you don’t address will become a mess.” Remember there is a difference between asking for silence and asking for quiet. Display symbols that convey the voice level and collaboration expectations for the current activity. Y → Yes, it’s over! A tool or technique might not be a success the first time. Reflect, tweak, and repeat twice before ditching. Progress, grow, and change through reflection. Don’t give up too early because you’re expecting perfection. Perfection doesn't exist. Thanks to P.
